Deborah Chuma, the mastermind behind a Zambian fashion label known as DebbieChu. Is a Christ centered young lady, describing herself as a simple, quirky vintage lover, who is an art enthusiast.
At a tender age, Deborah developed an eye for fashion, and grew more confident in the craft during her high school years. She got her first big break in the year of 2014, when she was awarded; Upcoming fashion designer, after the release of her 'An affair with the past, spring /summer collection' . An award given to her at the prestigious Zambian Fashion Week. She marks this as a humbling experience that paved the way to greater things.
During the course of her career, Deborah has worked with multiple local fashion icons, including models; Nandi Ngwenya and Christina Sakala. For whom she has prepared a multitude of clothing, from ready to wear, to runway worthy apparel. Recently, her brand has grown to cater for the needs of brides, creating beautifully tailored gowns for their special day.
Happy bride in Debbiechu
Deborah has had the honor of meeting Belgian fashion icon, Natalie Joos, only two months after seeing her on E! television. Apparently, she had been in the country to host a three – day Fashion Master Class, one Deborah was to attend. Having arrived late to the second session of the Master Class, Deborah was noticed by Natalie, who thereafter kept making reference to her style. The two met one early cold morning, for a short ten – minute chat, which eventually paved way to photoshoot. The shoot involved at least 10 vintage styles, and later Debbie would feature as a 'Muse' on Tales of Endearment - a collection of photos and stories by Natalie, featuring today's "who's-who" of the vintage clothing scenery.
As many creatives do, Debbie is expected to have a routine creative process. Hers in particular, is different each time, saying some of her masterpieces are created at the last minute.
Today, Debbiechu clothing is easily accessible to all, as it is found in a Kamanga Concept Store. A store hosting at least 11 creatives and their work, launched earlier this year.
